Celebrate the holiday Season with ULI Colorado! Join us as we close out this year and look ahead to 2026—this time inside one of Denver’s most iconic civic landmarks: the newly renovated Denver Central Library.
With a history dating back to 1889 and recognized today as the largest library between Los Angeles and Chicago, the Central Library continues to evolve. The original 540,000-square-foot building—designed by Michael Graves alongside Denver’s Klipp Colussy Jenks DuBois—opened in 1995 and has now undergone a transformative 93,550-square-foot modernization led by GH Phipps and StudioTrope, with generous support from the Denver Public Library Friends Foundation.
The renovation reinforces the strong geometries that define the building while creating entirely new experiences that activate and reimagine the main level. Major upgrades include the redesigned and relocated 10,000-square-foot Children’s Library, fully renovated restrooms with a new all-gender option, modernized elevators and mechanical systems, improved energy efficiency, expanded meeting and programming spaces, revitalized public areas such as the Grand Hall, upgraded ADA access, and enhancements to Acoma Plaza
Blending thoughtful modernization with respect for its architectural legacy, the Denver Central Library of the future challenges preconceptions of what a library can be and is now better equipped to serve and inspire Denverites for decades to come.
